Growth Mindset Activities for Kids

Six simple, screen-free activities that teach children aged 3–6 the power of NOT YET — at home or in the classroom.

Make a “Not Yet” Magic Wand

Colour and cut out a magic wand together. When your child says “I can't do it!”, wave the wand and add the magic words: “…NOT YET!” It turns a frustrating moment into a playful one.

Start a Brain Power-Up Chart

Each time your child tries something hard — a puzzle, a new word, tying laces — colour in a section of a progress chart. Celebrate the trying, not just the finishing.

Swap the Words Game

Practise swapping “I can't” for “I can't do it, NOT YET”. Take turns saying tricky things out loud and adding the magic ending. Even grown-ups can join in — children love correcting us!

Story Time with a Question

Read a picture book and pause when a character struggles. Ask: “What could they try next?” Stories like SKIP'S MAGIC WORDS model the power of NOT YET in a way little ones remember.

Celebrate Effort with Badges

Print and cut out reward badges for effort: “You kept trying!”, “You asked for help!”, “You tried a new way!”. Praise the hard work, not just the result.

The Hard Thing of the Day

Pick one small challenge each day — zipping a coat, drawing a letter, hopping on one foot. Name it the “Hard Thing of the Day” and cheer every attempt, whether it works or not.
